Nashville Sports Council Renames Volunteer of the Year Award After Longtime Sports Supporter Rick Regen
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Following a unanimous vote by its board of directors, the Nashville Sports Council has renamed its Volunteer of the Year Award to honor Nashville sports pioneer Rick Regen.
Regen, who passed away Nov. 5, was one of the founding board members of the Nashville Sports Council and remained a board member, dedicated volunteer and sports advocate for over 27 years.
“Rick’s impact on the Nashville sports community is immeasurable,” Scott Ramsey, President/CEO of the Nashville Sports Council, said. “He was one of those people who was always there willing to help, volunteer, pitch-in and support anything that he thought would make our city, and specifically sports in our city, a better place.
“Our staff and board of directors could not think of a better way to honor’s Rick’s legacy than to award the Rick Regen Volunteer of the Year Award annually to one of our incredible volunteers to remember and memorialize his contributions to our organization and city. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with his wonderful wife Suzanne and his entire family.”
For nearly four decades, Regen had a major impact in sports in Nashville. He was also a pivotal figure in bringing the Tennessee Titans, then Oilers, to town. Additionally, Regen was a leader in the support of the expansion bid for the NHL to award Nashville a franchise in what would become the Nashville Predators.
A proud University of Tennessee alum, Regen served as president of the Davidson County University of Tennessee Alumni Association and president of the Nashville Big Orange Club.
“Without question, Rick was the most reliable volunteer the Sports Council has ever had, serving in a major role for nearly every event we have hosted the past 25 years, big and small,” Ramsey said. “I am going to miss Rick, and I know our staff, board, other volunteers and entire sports community will too.”
