Local Runner Completes Virtual 5K Every Day for 18 Days Straight
By Megan Skaggs
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Local runner Chris Weinman ran 3.1 miles each day for 18-straight days courtesy of the Nashville Sports Council’s Run for the Return of Sports Virtual 5K.
“During this time of quarantine, when most running events have been canceled or postponed, I was looking for a spark to help keep myself active,” Weinman said.
Within the first few days, Weinman made a “silent deal” with himself to run the 5K every single day and told friends to hold him more accountable, even when the date was extended from 10 to 18 days.
“I knew I had to just keep going,” Weinman said.
Weinman’s workplace, Gresham Smith, is how he first heard about the Virtual 5K.
“My employer (Smith) actively promotes employee wellness and they sponsored a number of folks joining the Virtual 5K to support the Nashville Sports Council,” Weinman said. “Throughout the challenge, we exchanged plans, results, stories and photos to keep each other motivated towards the goal.”
Weinman kept engaged by not running the same route twice while staying close to home, although some days were tougher than others.
“The last day may have been the toughest,” he said. “I spent nearly 12 hours in the car on Sunday and by the time I ran on Monday, it already felt very hot and humid,” Weinman said.
Despite the heat and humidity, Weinman was able to finish with his quickest time of 25:55 at an 8.19-mile pace.
In all, over 200 participants made this inaugural 5K a rousing success.
