Georgia Tech, ACC Big Winners in Second Annual DICK'S Sporting Goods Collegiate Challenge Cup

Georgia Tech emerges as team stroke play champion with the ACC taking home the Conference Challenge

Kingston Springs, Tenn. (Sept. 21, 2014) – The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and the ACC avenged last year’s SEC sweep by claiming the team and conference crown at the Second Annual DICK’S Sporting Goods Collegiate Challenge Cup.  Georgia’s Lee McCoy and South Carolina’s Will Starke were the only recipients of hardware for the SEC, finishing first and second, respectively, in individual stroke play.

The multi-day collegiate event brought twelve teams from the ACC and SEC to The Golf Club of Tennessee for a 54-hole team and individual stroke play event, followed by an 18-hole match play conference finale, pitting the teams in each conference against each other to play for “Top Conference” honors.

Representing the Atlantic Coast Conference was Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech, Louisville, NC State, and Virginia.  Georgia, Missouri, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt represented the Southeastern Conference in the second annual event.

After two rounds of play Friday, Georgia Tech led Vanderbilt by two strokes.  Tech surged ahead with a blistering second round, coming from 10 shots back to take the lead. The third round of play featured a constant back and forth battle between Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt, but Tech emerged victorious on senior Drew Czuchry’s dramatic chip-in from just off the 18th green.  Tech finished one stroke ahead of Vanderbilt to claim the title.

The individual stroke play title was claimed by Georgia’s Lee McCoy.  McCoy shot a steady 67, 69, and 69 to finish 8-under par for the tournament. Going into the final round of competition, McCoy trailed leader Carson Jacobs from Vanderbilt by three strokes. Jacobs would not be able to hold onto the lead, shooting 4-over in the final round to finish 4-under par for the tournament.  McCoy was pushed hard by South Carolina’s Will Starke who finished the tournament in second place at 7-under par.

The event concluded on Sunday with a unique ACC versus SEC match play competition.  Thirty individual match-ups would determine the Conference Champion.  The match-ups consisted of players from the following teams:

·       Duke vs. Missouri

·       NC State vs. Texas A&M

·       Ole Miss vs. Clemson

·       Louisville vs. Georgia

·       Virginia vs. South Carolina

·       Georgia Tech vs. Vanderbilt

Matches were tight all day, but in the end the ACC prevailed and claimed the travelling trophy, besting the SEC by a score of 16.5 to 13.5. A full list of results can be found on the event website at DSGCollegiateChallenge.com.

Event dates for next year’s DICK’S Sporting Goods Collegiate Challenge Cup have yet to be determined, but it will be played once more at The Golf Club of Tennessee. A ninety-minute highlight show will be broadcast on ESPNU on October 12, 2014 at 1 PM CST with a broadcast on the SEC Network to follow at a later date that has yet to be determined.
